Get The Most From Your Warm Ups
We get it, warm ups aren’t the most exciting part of your workout. But here’s why you should pay more attention to them.
Warm ups do lots of great stuff for you (members) such as:
Move the joints through full ranges of motion
Elevate body temp
Increase blood flow and oxygen to muscles
Prepare you for higher intensity work
Warm ups do lots of great things for us (coaches) such as:
Allow time to evaluate members movements
Allow time to teach movements that translate to the workout
Allow time to assess attitude, focus, presence of members
Allow time to inform members about what to come
We could go on and on…
We encourage members to take warm ups seriously because we learn movements by performing them at low intensity. That’s right, you become better through practice and practice is achieved at lower intensities than what’s generally found in our workouts. Every repetition is a chance to improve while doing the things listed above.
Here are some tips on how to maximize your warm ups:
Focus. Pay attention to how each rep feels. Is your weight balanced, is your back neutral, etc.
Slow down. Each rep should take you 2-3 seconds (in most body weight examples). Count your time and reps. Plus you’ll never ask your friend “How many was that?” which is a classic sign of not paying attention.
Don’t accept sloppy movement. If something is off, fix it and do it again. Each poorly executed rep has to be undone, we might as well address it right away.
Work through a full range of motion. We want to drive engagement of the entire musculature surrounding the joint.
